Starting from Vourkoti, an authentic rural village with the highest altitude in the Cyclades (620m), the path follows a slope that borders the northern side of the long, narrow Achla valley. It then descends to a deep river, crossing over an old stone footbridge, near the historical St. Nicolaos Monastery where we stop for visiting. The walk continues towards the North-East, above the verdant Achla valley, officially nominated as a protected area of natural beauty. Achla bay at the end of the route is a beautiful unspoiled beach with dunes and caves, where the river estuary forms a small lagoon that welcomes both migrant and resident birds. A zone of absolute protection! Rest and swim. Depending on the weather, we return to Chora by a little boat, or by jeep car, or hike back again this time up to St.Nicolaos Monastery.
