The wealth of water (rivers, streams, springs, waterfalls) and its mountains with ridges that intersect across the surface of the island, create numerous valleys and steep ravines, which increasingly reward with rich flora and diverse landscapes, which deserve to be explored inch by inch.
The flora of the island is indeed impressive in its variety: Chestnut trees, walnut trees, sycamore, oak trees, weeping willows, poplar, mulberry, osier and olive trees, fields of thyme, crocus and sage can all be seen along the routes that lead you to picturesque villages, they travel over stone bridges, meet old watermills, byzantine monasteries, small churches typical of the Greek countryside and secluded beaches. For centuries the land is crossed by cobbled paths, which once were the main communication axis between castles, settlements and villages and at the same time connection with the coast, the pastures, the crops and churches. This network is the backbone of the rural land, which is maintained even today with a network of accessible trails Having harmony with the nature in mind and the local stone as a tool, the people of Andros created "emassies" (terraced plots) using the "xerolithia" method (lit. dry stone wall – masonry wall construction technique with no connecting material). They are admirable not only for their wild beauty but also for their builders' ability to battle the forces of nature and accomplish turning the barren hill and mountain sides to cultivable lands through the rational use of the surroundings environment and available resources. Using the same stone and technique, they also constructed threshing floors, wells, lodgings for people and animals, cobbled paths, fencing walls, water mills, bridges etc man made works of art, harmonious to the environment, creating this typical Andros countryside.
